3-D Secure

Online credit card payments are still one of the most frequently used payment options worldwide for purchases made on the Internet. However, these online payment options do not come without risks. Online credit card payments are vulnerable to abuse, and to prevent this, a protocol was developed in 1999 to offer credit card holders the option of activating a PIN and/or password for their credit cards. This protocol is called 3-D Secure, and is a security technology which protects you, as a webshop owner, when it comes to online credit card payments made in your webshop.

3-D Secure (also known as ‘Verified by Visa’ and ‘MasterCard SecureCode’) are security protocols developed by Visa and MasterCard. Thanks to 3-D Secure, webshop owners are protected from chargebacks (Note! You are only protected from chargebacks if the case in question involves fraud).  Put simply, authorisation from the payer/3-D Secure is a confirmation that the online shopper is actually the cardholder. If you, as a webshop owner, participate in the 3-D Secure programme, you will be helping to prevent identity theft, while also ensuring that online shoppers feel safer in your online shop, ultimately resulting in repeat business.

Three ways of using 3-D Secure

When you connect credit card via ICEPAY, you can choose to activate 3-D Secure. After your 3-D Secure application is approved, there are 3 different ways to use 3DSecure in your webshop:

Required: You activate 3DSecure and the settings will be in such way that only consumers who have a credit card with a 3DSecure code can pay with their credit card in your webshop. The advantage is that all your credit card transactions are protected extra. A disadvantage is that not every credit card holder has a 3DSecure code and therefore not every customer can pay in your webshop with credit card.

Optional: You activate 3DSecure and the settings will be in such way that every credit card holder can pay in your webshop. Consumers with a 3DSecure code pay with this code and these transactions are extra secured. Customers without a 3DSecure code can also pay in your webshop without this code. These transactions are not extra protected with 3DSecure.

Off: You do not activate 3DSecure. Every credit card holder can pay in your webshop, but none of your transactions have extra 3DSecure protection (no extra costs will be charged for this option).
